Born and raised in Liverpool, I currently live in London and have been working as a playwright and author since the early 1990s. I enjoy collaborating across art forms, with composers, musicians, visual artists, dance specialists and draw on relationships with scientists, historians, psychotherapists, medical practitioners, healers, to expand the scope of my practice and work. 

KINDERTRANSPORT won the Verity Bargate and Meyer-Whitworth Awards, first produced by Soho Theatre Company in 1993, translated into many languages, performed in the West End, Off Broadway and all over the world. Other plays include THE TRUE-LIFE FICTION OF MATA HARI, Palace Theatre, Watford, 2002; HOW TO BEAT A GIANT, Unicorn Theatre, 2007; THE A-Z OF MRS P, with Gwyneth Herbert, Southwark Playhouse, 2014; POPPY + GEORGE, Palace Theatre, Watford, 2016; THIS IS ME, snapshots of girlhood, interactive memoir as monologue, Chickenshed, 2018.

Plays for BBC radio, include HEN PARTY, PSYCHE, Woman’s Hour serial, TIGER WINGS. Plays and book, "DIANE SAMUELS' KINDERTRANSPORT" are published by Nick Hern Books.

 I facilitate writing workshops for all ages and levels of experience promoting professional, personal and creative well-being.

 After graduating in 1982 from Cambridge University with BA Hons History, I qualified as a drama teacher at Goldsmiths’ College, London, and went on to work full-time in inner London secondary schools. In 1989, I received an advanced diploma in Drama in Education from Central School for Speech and Drama, London and in 2005 was Pearson Creative Fellow at the British Library which published The Writers Magic Notebook in 2006. 

 Lecturing and mentoring includes work at the universities of Birmingham, Reading, Goldsmiths', Westminster as Royal Literary Fund Fellow and Regent's University. Also running workshops for IATE (Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education), Alternatives, Theatre Royal Haymarket and the National Gallery. 

 I run a regular writers group and week-long residential writing courses at Cortijo Romero, personal development centre in southern Spain. Since 2007, I have been Writer in Residence at Grafton Primary School in Islington, London.
